Dear Parent and students:

This is an unusual year. We are starting off differently and working in ways that we never have before. Fortunately, we have been using this format for years in my PreCal classes and my students have found MyMathlab very very helpful. The program will show them examples, even step by step. They can teach themselves when necessary. My students always fight to stay in my class because they say that I teach. (I thought everyone did) I love to answer questions. I am not a teacher that will be upset or blame you when you don’t understand. I will always treat you as if you were my own child. I care about your future. I look forward to getting back into the classroom but until then we will make the most of this.

Pre-Cal is a very important class. In my opinion, it is the most important class of your high school experience. Why? Because this class is what will prepare you for College Algebra or Calculus. This may be the last class that you take that will have a teacher who will answer your questions.

MANY of my students start out the year feeling that math is their weakest subject but finish the year recognizing that they are much smarter and better prepared than they thought. Some have even said that it was their new strength.

We are using a different format than any year, but you will have 3 to 4 assignments per week. I will work with you. I am a very strict teacher but I am also very understanding. I will confiscate phones in class if they are a distraction, but I will always return them at the end of the period. I do not tolerate students talking while I’m teaching so as to guarantee there are no distractions.

Things to remember about grades. I usually update grades in the grade book once a week. So when you see that you have a 50 on an assignment in the grade book but you have already completed the assignment with a 100. You have two grade books. MyMathLab and Skyward. If your parents get mad about your average just show them that you have already brought up the grades but I have not updated the grade book yet. Remember that your assignment grades are dynamic (changing) not static (fixed, permanent). When I record your grade the assignment may not be completed so I will record the grade that you had at the time, but it still can be raised. That is not true of Quizzes or Tests.
